Is it time for the Spring hedge trim?
Even after the odd day of sunshine in April, it can still feel like a winters day here in Northumberland. The wet and windy weather, cold nights and late frosts have definitely become something more common than not over the last few months and this has put the growing, pruning and trimming season back by a few weeks.
We are starting to see a little bit of greenery (dare we say it!) and signs of new growth in our gardens and in nature. Traditionally, early spring would be the best time for your first hedge cut but as previously mentioned, as we are still experiencing frosts and cooler weather, later on in April and early to mid May would be better for this year.
It is a good idea to assess the growth of your hedge. If it has started to produce new shoots and leaves, it's usually a good indicator that it's ready for a trim.
We do also need to be mindful of nesting birds and not disturb their habitat. A light trim with hand cutters can be done as this wouldn't disturb nesting birds but any heavier pruning, needs to be mindful of the nesting season. Again with the cooler weather, we have noticed that the bird nesting season has been delayed by a few weeks but you can keep an eye out on this by watching to see if birds are regularly visiting the hedge.
Regular trimming throughout the growing season (spring to autumn) helps maintain a neat appearance and promotes healthy growth. However, avoid cutting too late in the season to allow the hedge to harden off before winter.
